IPEVO Point 2 View (P2V) USB Camera Review

pi_p2vWhen you think about a webcam, what comes to mind? I know most of us will recognise the typical web camera’s that have become very popular over the years. Basically consisting of a small bubble shaped camera on top of a small, wobbly, unstable stand. The balancing act of having the camera on top of your monitor, or on a stack of CD’s and books to try and get that perfect angle is much more than just a hassle.

Though fortunately our good friends at IPEVO have come up with a nifty, possibly Pixar inspired webcam that takes care of all these problems, and offers much, much more! Going by the name of “Point 2 View” (P2V) this USB camera lets you do exactly that, point it where ever you like, to show just about anything, at almost any angle possible!

After their super fast shipping I was delighted to find the brand new sample to review, it came very nicely packaged in a suitably sized shipping box. Nice to see even the little details like packaging have been taken care of. Unfortunately though somehow the supplied driver disc was cracked, possibly in manufacturing. Thankfully, a quick email to the team at IPEVO and it was taken care of, they had found and resolved the issue and ensured it will not happen again, good on you IPEVO!

Upon opening the box I found the Driver Disc, Quick Start Guide, the unique weighted base, an additional laptop mounting clip, and of course the IPEVO Point 2 View. The packaging is very simple and elegant, perfectly keeping the contents safe and secure.

Immediately you will notice the P2V’s weighted base, really, really is weighted! I was extremely surprised how sturdy and well designed it is! Most of the time bases like these simply do not have enough weight behind them to be fully useful, yet IPEVO have gone to extra lengths to engineer the base to perfection.

According to my pair of scales the base weighs in at a very generous 332 grams! This is one of the secrets that allows the P2V to view almost any angle. The P2V’s base features multiple moveable joints on it’s arms to allow you to point the camera at any object you can find. With this you can adjust the camera to suit any height. You can also adjust the base so it points further out, or further inwards and zoom into your object.

The base also features three mounting points, so you can have the camera at any orientation you choose. Below are some examples of the functionality of this base.

As you can see the possibilities with the base are virtually endless. Let’s carry on to the next page where we will show the functionality of the P2V, test the bundled P2V Software and also image quality.
